Weekly Letter from Ms. Purdy – October 18th

Cornerstone Families,

Happy Friday!  It’s been another great week.  On the topic of greatness…last week I gave a shout out to Mr. Burger for a job well done, and I’ve decided, with such an amazing staff, we should do that every week.  This week’s shout out goes to…Ms. Mckenzie!  She teaches 7th grade Language Arts and has been a fantastic addition to our staff.  Ms. Mckenzie is so enthusiastic, positive and connected to her students’ needs. We’re so glad she’s a part of the Cornerstone family!

If you didn’t get a chance to attend the Crime Stoppers of Houston presentation about cyber safety on Wednesday…you missed out, but don’t worry…we have more opportunities coming soon.  On Thursday, November 14th at 5:30, Crime Stoppers will be back to present about human trafficking in Houston, and they’ll be back once more on December 5th at 6:00 to discuss teen mental health. If you’re interested in the cyber safety handouts, we still have some available, just inquire at the front office, and we’ll make sure you get one.

Congratulations are in order for the Cornerstone Academy Spelling Bee champion and runner-up.  Our school spelling bee was held yesterday.  There were ups and downs, and it ultimately culminated with the word avocado, resulting in Shreya Chella taking 1st place and Daniyal Salman as our runner-up.  These amazing spellers will advance to the district spelling bee on January 31st at Westchester Academy, and we’re hoping that it will be a Cornerstone student who represents SBISD at the Houston Public Media Bee on February 29th.  Way to go, Shreya and Daniyal!!!

Halloween is around the corner, which means it’s almost time for the StuCo Halloween Dance.  All current CSA students are welcome to dance and have fun in the gym on Friday, October 25th from 6:00 to 8:00.  If you didn’t pre-order tickets, you can still pay $5 at the door. There will be dancing, food and contests…including pumpkin carving/decorating.  Please see all the attachments for all the details. Next week, Mr. Burger will send a message to explain how drop-off and pick-up will work.  It will be different since we’ll be in the gym, so be sure to read the instructions next week. Halloween Dance Info 2019.docx  Halloween Pumpkin Contest 2019.docx

Red Ribbon Week also kicks off next week!  Beginning on Wednesday, October 23rd it’s time to dress up to send a message that you choose to stay drug free.  Please see the attachment for details about the theme for each day.  The theme for Wednesday, October 31st is, of course, Halloween.  Students will be allowed to dress up in school-appropriate costumes as long as their faces are not covered and no weapons (even fake ones) are involved. Red Ribbon Week 2019.docx

Don’t forget to order your yearbook! Prices go up after October 28th! Cornerstone Academy yearbooks can be purchased here.  8th grade yearbook ads are also available to purchase. You can buy and create a personal ad online for your 8th grader. First choose the size of your ad, then the layout (1 picture, 4 pictures, etc.), and then download your pictures and text. Ads are due February 1st, but do it now while you’re thinking about it! Any questions can be directed to Mrs. Bimler or Ms. Kim.
